When referring to international students’ traditional destinations, the Dominican Republic isn’t often one of the first places to come to mind. However, it does have a reputation for higher education that is well-established and well-documented. Founded in 1538, the Universidad Santo Tomas de Aquino is reportedly the location of one of the first–ever, originally founded universities in the Americas.
Because tuition varies from university to university – and because money is frequently a major concern when it comes to college students – it’s best to check with each university individually before making your final decision as to which Dominican Republic university to attend.

Located in Santa Domingo’s urban setting, Universidad APEC was established in 1965. The grades and academic records of a student, in addition to entrance examinations, are the determining factors for admission. This is the least selective school in the Dominican Republic with an 80 to 90% admission rate range. They offer courses in science and technology, English, language and cultural studies, business, and social sciences, and arts and humanities.
Another one of Santo Domingo’s universities, the Universidad del Caribe, was founded in 1995. The university boasts a more selective, 60 to 70% admission rate range here. Courses of study offered consist of science and technology, English, business and social sciences, and other basic courses.
This university is located in yet another urban setting; this time, however, the location is the Santiago metropolis. It was founded in 1974 and has a large enrollment range. International students are welcome and can study courses including science and technology, English, medicine and health, language and cultural studies, business and social sciences, as well as arts and humanities. There are also basic courses of study available.
Santiago de los Caballeros is a medium-sized city and home to Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra. It was founded in 1962 and also boasts a large student enrollment range. As with most of these Dominican Republic universities, non-academic and academic facilities and services include administrative services, sports activities and/or facilities, and a library. In addition to basic courses, areas of study include science and technology, English, medicine and health, business and social sciences, and arts and humanities.
Yet another Santa Domingo–located university, this institution was founded in 1538 and has a similarly large enrollment range when compared to the previously discussed universities. Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo’s areas of study include basic courses, science and technology, English, medicine and health, business and sciences, and arts and humanities.
