If you’re anything like me, your New Year’s resolutions include saving some extra money. Every year I try to start fresh and save up for a nice trip abroad or a brand new TV. My life would be so much easier if I actually had money saved up for those large expenses. But of course, like most New Year’s resolutions, it gets forgotten by February.

But this year, I decided to be smart about it. If I follow a very simple plan, I will have an extra $1378 in my savings account by the end of the year. Sometimes, the only reason saving money seems so impossible is because we don’t have enough discipline. This simple yet foolproof plan solves the issue with discipline. I invite you to try this plan with me and see how easy it can be to save this much without really trying.

Here is the plan:

Every week, you will put a small amount into your savings account (or into a piggy bank, whichever is easier). The first week, you will only put $1 away. The second week – $2. Third week – $3. Are you seeing the pattern? Every week just add 1 dollar to the amount you put away last week.

The final week of the year you will put away $52. This is the most you’ll ever have to put away in one week. Not too bad, huh?

At the end of the year, you will have $1378!

Now comes the fun part! What will you spend it on? You could keep it and follow the same plan for another year to easily double the amount.

Or you can take your family on a nice trip for vacation.

You can pay off some debt.

You can also send more money to your friends and family back home.

Or get amazing presents for everyone for next Christmas.

Regardless of what you decide to do with it, enjoy it! You’ll be happy to know that saving money can be an effortless task, but also that you have a “safety net” in case of an emergency.

To help you stay on track with this plan, we’ve put together this chart that you can hang on your fridge and check off each time you’ve made a deposit for the week. We are happy to share it with you, so feel free to print it out and use it.
