Ecuador‘s ethnically diverse population of 15.2 million speak Spanish as the country’s official language. Located in the northwest corner of South America, it is bordered by Colombia to the north, Peru on the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to its west. But because Ecuador’s landscape boasts of lush jungles, beautiful coasts, and soaring mountains, it’s nearly impossible to decide on just one location to visit. So, here are five cities for your consideration:

Ecuador’s capital, Quito is located high in the mountains and boasts of a rich Inca history. It’s architecture and culture combines both traditional and modern worlds. Visitors are awed by the stunning church steeples and colonial homes and buildings. Take the tram to the top of nearby Pichincha Volcano; the panoramic view is unmatched.

Known as the “town of longevity”, the locals believe it’s because of their stress-free lifestyles and clean mountain air. This area has become popular with senior citizens looking for a place to retire and those wanting a relaxing, peaceful vacation. It is surrounded by national parks and mountains that provide an array of opportunities for horseback riding, hiking, and long, leisurely walks. Sore feet? Tired visitors can also treat themselves to a reasonably priced professional massage at the local spa.

Like Vilcabamba, this coastal town is also known for its relaxed, laid-back lifestyle, but offers great surfing as well. The town’s atmosphere explodes with a mix of sea-loving locals and sun-worshiping tourists every summer. Montañita is a bit trendy, but it’s the perfect place for taking a break from your hectic career to enjoy life. Discover your inner hippie!

At the other end of the spectrum, this city is for the thrill-seeker in you. Try white water rafting, bridge jumping, downhill mountain biking, or swinging at the edge of the world; just let go of your fears and go for it. Hike to the Devil’s Cauldron waterfall or to Tungurahua, one of South America’s most active volcanoes. But don’t worry, there are many relaxing things to try, too, like bathing in the thermal waters.

Named the “City of Peace” by UNESCO, this tranquil town is famous for its leather shops and has become very popular with retirees from around the world. Visitors looking for inexpensive but quality leather shoes, bags, belts, or other items, will find them here. Quieter than other Ecuadorian shopping towns, you can visit any day of the week, but be sure to come on a Sunday to get the best bargains – that’s market day.

All in all, Ecuador is a lush and beautiful country, filled with history and culture. Each town is rich with diversity and offers a plethora of things to do and see. Budding photographers can capture the inspiring architecture and landscape, surfers can ‘hang ten’ on amazing waves, and shopaholics can spend money to their heart’s content. Join the thousands of tourists who return year after year and make Ecuador your next stop to explore!
